Corey Pronman of The Athletic stirred up some debate this August with his annual ranking of the top players under 23 years old. While most of the list generated the usual chatter, one name in particular has drawn sharp criticism from fans and analysts alike: Buffalo Sabres forward Zach Benson. According to Pronman, Benson was placed behind several players who, on paper, have not accomplished nearly as much at the NHL level. The decision has been labeled by more than one prospect expert as indefensible.
Benson, who turned 19 in May, put together a solid rookie campaign with the Sabres last season. He logged 11 goals and 19 assists in 71 games, showing poise and creativity that belied his age. More importantly, he earned the trust of the coaching staff in high-leverage situations, something rare for a player his age. His hockey IQ and playmaking ability were on full display, and many scouts believe he has top-line potential.
The issue with Pronman's ranking is not just where Benson landed, but who was placed ahead of him. Several of those players have yet to prove themselves at the professional level, while Benson has already done so in the toughest league in the world. It is one thing to value upside, but it is another to ignore tangible results. For a player who has already shown he can hang with the best, being ranked behind unproven prospects feels like a misstep.
Sabres fans have every right to be frustrated. Benson is a key piece of the team's future, and seeing him undervalued in a national ranking does not sit well. The good news is that rankings do not determine outcomes. Benson will have plenty of chances this season to prove that he belongs in the top tier of young players in the league. If his rookie year was any indication, he will not need much time to make his case.
