Detroit community violence intervention groups took their work into the field this spring, launching a free flag football league to give teens a safe place to play and support that goes beyond sports. The program, which kicked off in April, aims to reach young people during the high-risk after-school and evening hours, offering an alternative to street activity.
Organizers say the league is not just about football. It pairs each team with trained violence interrupters and mentors who build relationships with players on and off the field. Coaches focus on conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and goal-setting, weaving those lessons into practice and game time.
The league is open to teens ages 14 to 17, with no cost to join. Equipment, jerseys, and snacks are all provided. Games are held at neutral locations across the city, chosen for their accessibility and safety. Several games have drawn crowds of family members and neighbors, turning the fields into community gathering spots.
One organizer described the league as a "relief valve" for neighborhoods where summer tensions can spike. By giving teens a structured outlet and trusted adults to talk to, the program hopes to reduce retaliatory violence and build long-term trust.
The league is set to run through August, with plans to expand to more sites next year. Organizers are also exploring adding workshops on job readiness and education access for older teens. For now, the focus is on keeping kids engaged, active, and safe.
