Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby will be stepping away from the Red Raiders football program indefinitely to enter a gambling addiction treatment program, sources confirmed on Wednesday. The decision comes amid an ongoing NCAA investigation into allegations that Sorsby placed wagers on college football games.
Sorsby, a transfer from the University of Cincinnati who joined Texas Tech ahead of the 2024 season, has been the subject of scrutiny since reports surfaced linking him to unauthorized betting activity. While the exact scope of the alleged violations remains unclear, the NCAA prohibits athletes from betting on any college sport in which the organization oversees competition.
In a statement released through the university, Sorsby acknowledged his actions and expressed remorse. "I take full responsibility for my mistakes and am committed to getting the help I need," he said. "I have voluntarily entered a treatment program to address my gambling addiction and will cooperate fully with the NCAA investigation."
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire expressed support for Sorsby while emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. "Our primary concern is Brendan’s health and well-being," McGuire said. "He has our full support as he seeks treatment, but we also understand the gravity of the allegations and will respect the process."
The NCAA has not yet announced any formal sanctions against Sorsby, but the investigation is expected to continue in the coming weeks. Under NCAA rules, athletes found guilty of betting on college sports can face suspensions, loss of eligibility, or permanent bans from competition.
Sorsby's absence leaves a significant gap in the Red Raiders' quarterback room. The junior had been competing for the starting role after transferring from Cincinnati, where he threw for over 1,800 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. Texas Tech is expected to turn to backup options while Sorsby remains away from the team indefinitely.
The case has reignited discussions about the growing prevalence of sports betting among college athletes, particularly as legalized gambling expands across the United States. Advocacy groups have called for increased education and support systems to help student-athletes navigate the pressures and temptations associated with sports wagering.
