Mets Beat Marlins 9-4 as Eury Pérez Struggles Again

The New York Mets shook off an early deficit and rolled to a 9-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, handing Miami starter Eury Pérez his third consecutive rough outing. Pérez, once viewed as a cornerstone of the Marlins' rotation, lasted just four innings and gave up six earned runs on eight hits, including two home runs.

Miami actually struck first, plating four runs in the top of the second inning against Mets starter José Buttó. A two-run double from Jesús Sánchez and a pair of RBI singles gave the Marlins a brief 4-0 cushion. But the lead evaporated quickly. New York answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, then took control with a four-run fourth inning that chased Pérez from the game.

Pérez's velocity was there, sitting in the mid-90s, but his command was off. He walked three batters and fell behind in counts, allowing the Mets to sit on his fastball. Over his last three starts, the young right-hander has surrendered 17 earned runs in just 12 innings, a stretch that has pushed his ERA above six.

The Mets' offense was led by Francisco Lindor, who drove in three runs with a double and a sacrifice fly, and Pete Alonso, who crushed a two-run homer in the fourth. Brandon Nimmo also chipped in with two hits and an RBI.

Buttó settled down after the rough second inning, retiring ten straight batters at one point. He finished with six innings of work, allowing those four runs while striking out seven. The Mets' bullpen then shut the door, with Reed Garrett and Adam Ottavino combining for three scoreless frames.

For Miami, the loss stings beyond the scoreboard. Pérez was supposed to be the anchor of a young staff, but his recent slide has raised questions about his mechanics and confidence. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said after the game that Pérez is "fighting himself" and that the team will keep working with him to find a rhythm.

The Mets, meanwhile, have now won four of their last five and look sharp as they push toward the postseason picture. They'll go for the series sweep on Wednesday afternoon.
