The Seattle Mariners leaned on a mix of power and precision on Monday night, using a grand slam from Josh Naylor and a pair of successful replay challenges to slip past the Baltimore Orioles, 6-3.
Naylor delivered the biggest blow in the fourth inning, launching a 1-2 pitch deep to right field with the bases loaded. The blast cleared the bases and gave Seattle a lead it would not relinquish. It was Naylor's third home run of the season and came at a critical moment after the Orioles had scratched across a run in the top of the frame.
But the story of the night was Seattle's aggressive use of instant replay. In the fifth inning, the Mariners challenged a call at first base that initially went against them. The replay showed the runner was out, and the overturned call ended a potential Orioles rally. Later, in the seventh, manager Dan Wilson challenged a tag play at second base. The call was reversed again, wiping out a Baltimore base runner and keeping the Mariners in control.
Seattle starter Bryce Miller worked six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six. The bullpen held firm, with Andres Munoz closing the door in the ninth for his fourth save. The Orioles managed a late run in the eighth, but the Mariners answered with an insurance run in the bottom half.
The win moves Seattle to 12-10 on the year, while Baltimore falls to 11-11. The two teams continue their series on Tuesday.
