Bobby Cox, the Hall of Fame manager who turned the Atlanta Braves into a dynasty and led them to their only World Series championship in 1995, has died. The team announced his passing on Saturday. He was 84.
Cox is widely regarded as one of the greatest managers in baseball history. He guided the Braves to an unprecedented 14 consecutive division titles from 1991 to 2005, a feat that may never be matched. Under his steady hand, the club won five National League pennants and captured the hearts of fans across the South with the 1995 World Series victory over the Cleveland Indians.
"He led our team to 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants, and the unforgettable World Series title in 1995," the Braves said in a statement. Cox was named National League Manager of the Year four times, in 1985, 1991, 2004, and 2005. He finished his career with 2,504 regular-season wins, ranking fourth all-time. Known for his fierce loyalty to players and his calm demeanor in the dugout, Cox was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. His death marks the end of an era for Braves Country, which will forever remember the man who built a winner.
