An Incomplete History of Seattle Sports

Seattle has a sports history that feels both rich and incomplete. The city has cheered for champions, mourned stolen teams, and waited decades for a single major title in the four biggest American sports. It is a story told through the Sonics, Seahawks, Sounders, Storm, Steelheads, Mariners, and Kraken.

The Seattle SuperSonics brought the city its only NBA championship in 1979, led by Jack Sikma and a raucous home crowd. But in 2008, the team was sold and moved to Oklahoma City, leaving a wound that still hasn't healed. Fans still wear old Sonics gear, hoping for a return. The Seahawks finally broke the city's long drought with a Super Bowl win in 2014, but the way they lost the next year on the one-yard line feels just as defining.

The Mariners are a different kind of story. They have never made it to the World Series. They have the longest active playoff drought in North American sports. Yet they gave us Ken Griffey Jr.'s smile, Ichiro's arm, and the 1995 season that saved baseball in Seattle. The Sounders have been a steady source of pride, winning two MLS Cups and building one of the loudest fan bases in the league. The Storm have been even more dominant, with four WNBA championships and a legacy of excellence.

The Kraken are the newest chapter. They arrived in 2021 and made a surprising playoff run in their second season. But like so much of Seattle sports, the story is still being written. The Steelheads, a rugby team, and other smaller clubs add texture, but the city's identity remains one of near-misses and what-ifs. Seattle has the passion, the fans, and the history. It just hasn't finished the story yet.
