The league announced that starting in 2026, a player's first targeting ejection of the season will no longer trigger an automatic suspension for the following game.

The shift represents a rare moment of common sense from a conference that has spent years tightening its discipline policies. Under the previous system, a player flagged for targeting was ejected from the current game and then forced to sit out the first half or the entirety of the next matchup. That double penalty often felt excessive, especially when the call itself was borderline.

Coaches have long argued that the rule punished players too harshly for a single split-second decision, particularly when replay reviews sometimes upheld questionable calls. The new approach keeps the ejection in place but removes the carryover suspension for the first offense. A second targeting call in the same season would still trigger a one-game ban.

Critics will say the change weakens player safety. But the ejection itself remains a powerful deterrent. Losing a player for the rest of a game can swing a season. Adding an extra game on top of that was overkill. The SEC appears to agree, and for once, the adjustment makes sense.
