The patriarch of one of baseball's most famous families would have turned 83 today. Sandy Alomar Sr., a fixture in the major leagues for more than two decades as a player and later as a coach, remains a significant figure in the sport's history, both for his own career and for the legacy he passed on to his sons.
Born in Salinas, Puerto Rico, Alomar built a reputation as a dependable infielder known for his speed and versatility. He broke into the majors in 1964 and went on to play for several teams, including the Braves, Mets, White Sox, Angels, Yankees, and Rangers. His best years came with the Angels in the early 1970s, where he earned an All-Star selection in 1970 and became a steady presence at second base and shortstop.
After retiring as a player, Alomar transitioned into coaching, sharing his knowledge with a new generation of players. His influence extended far beyond the field, however. He and his wife raised two sons, Sandy Jr. and Roberto, who both became All-Star catchers and enjoyed long major league careers of their own. The family's contributions to baseball have made the Alomar name one of the most respected in the game.
Today, fans and former teammates remember Sandy Alomar Sr. not only for his accomplishments on the diamond but for the quiet leadership and dedication that shaped a baseball dynasty.
