Reds rout Mets, who fall 11 under .500 again

Chase Burns delivered another quality start, tossing 5 1/3 strong innings to earn his fourth straight win as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Mets 7-2 on Tuesday night. The loss dropped the Mets to 22-33, putting them 11 games under the .500 mark for the second time this season.

New York, which finished April with a dismal 10-21 record, has now lost five in a row. The Mets have not been able to build any consistent momentum, and their offense struggled again against Reds pitching.

Eugenio Suarez and Elly De La Cruz each smashed two-run doubles off Mets starter David Peterson, who fell to 3-5 on the year. Peterson also surrendered a pair of RBI hits to Tyler Stephenson, who drove in runs in the third and fifth innings to help Cincinnati build an early lead.

Burns allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out six. He walked two batters but kept the Mets off balance for most of the night. The Reds bullpen closed the door with 3 2/3 scoreless innings to preserve the win.

For the Mets, the loss marks another low point in a season that has been defined by inconsistency and missed opportunities. They have now matched their season-worst mark of 11 games under .500, a hole they first dug in late April. With the schedule not getting any easier, New York will need to find answers quickly if they hope to climb back into contention.
