Lost season for some winter sports leads to adaptation in Black Hills visitor industry

Lost season for some winter sports leads to adaptation in Black Hills visitor industry

From October through early April, the northern Black Hills recorded nearly eight feet less snowfall than its historical average, a deficit that has effectively erased the winter sports season for many local businesses and recreation areas. The stark absence of snow has forced ski resorts, snowmobile outfitters, and winter gear rental shops to abandon their usual playbooks and pivot toward alternative offerings to keep visitors coming to the region.

Terry Peak Ski Area, a cornerstone of winter tourism, struggled to open more than a fraction of its trails, relying entirely on artificial snowmaking that could not compensate for the lack of natural precipitation. Nearby snowmobile trails remained bare and impassable for most of the season, leading to widespread cancellations and refunds. In response, several outfitters began promoting fat-tire biking on dry trails, winter hiking on exposed rock formations, and scenic wildlife tours that do not require snow cover. Lodging properties shifted marketing strategies to highlight spa packages, indoor recreation centers, and culinary events, hoping to attract guests who might otherwise have stayed home.

Local tourism officials note that while the lost season represents a significant financial blow—some estimates suggest a 30 to 40 percent drop in winter revenue—the industry’s ability to adapt demonstrates resilience. “We can’t control the weather, but we can control how we welcome people,” said one chamber representative. “We’re learning to sell the Black Hills as a year-round destination, not just a snow playground.” The hope is that these adaptations will build a more diversified visitor economy, even if future winters return to normal.
