Giants’ Ray Has Become Team’s Most Valuable Trade Chip

A blistering run of starts has turned San Francisco Giants left-hander Robbie Ray into the most coveted piece on the trade market. After a shaky return from Tommy John surgery, Ray has found his Cy Young form over the past six weeks, posting a 1.89 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 47 innings. That surge has completely reshaped how opposing front offices view him.

The Giants entered the season hoping to contend, but a middling record and a crowded injured list have shifted their focus toward the future. Ray, who is still owed roughly $50 million through 2026, was seen as a difficult contract to move just two months ago. Now, with his velocity back up and his slider biting like it did during his 2021 award season, teams are lining up.

Scouts from at least eight contending clubs have attended his last three outings. The asking price is reportedly high, and for good reason. A rental arm with Ray's pedigree is rare, but a controlled starter with his track record is almost unheard of at the deadline. The Giants are listening, but they are not desperate. If no offer blows them away, they are comfortable keeping him as a building block for 2025.

For now, Ray is focused on his next start. But every dominant inning only raises the stakes. The Giants hold the cards, and Ray is holding the best hand.
