Chicago Bears offense ‘wins’ the day (still no pads though)

The Chicago Bears wrapped up their second practice of training camp on Thursday, and while the defense had its moments, it was the offense that came away with the win on the day. That said, there is still a big caveat: no pads have been put on yet, so everything remains in the realm of shorts and shells.

Quarterback Caleb Williams looked sharper than he did on day one, showing better timing with his receivers on short and intermediate routes. He connected on a few nice throws over the middle, particularly to DJ Moore and Keenan Allen, who both seem to be building a quick rapport with the rookie. Williams also showed off his mobility, escaping the pocket a couple of times to extend plays, though the defense was told to stay off him.

The running back group also had a solid afternoon. Khalil Herbert looked explosive on outside runs, and Roschon Johnson continues to show he can be a factor in the passing game out of the backfield. The offensive line held up better in pass protection drills, though it is hard to judge much without real contact.

On the defensive side, the secondary had a few bright spots. Jaylon Johnson broke up a pass intended for Moore, and Tyrique Stevenson got his hands on a ball in the end zone during red zone work. But the pass rush was mostly neutralized, and the defense seemed a step slow in coverage at times.

Head coach Matt Eberflus reminded reporters after practice that the real evaluation starts when the pads go on, which is expected in a few days. Until then, the offense can enjoy its day, but everyone knows the tone will change once the hitting begins.
