Hunter Goodman continued his torrid June with his 26th home run of the season, but the Colorado Rockies bullpen could not hold a late lead, falling 10-7 to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night.
Goodman's solo shot in the fifth inning gave the Rockies a 5-4 advantage, extending his remarkable month at the plate. The rookie catcher has been one of the few bright spots in a struggling lineup, posting a slugging percentage well above .600 in June. His 26 homers now lead the team and rank among the top five in the National League.
Colorado appeared to be in control after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. But the relief corps unraveled in the eighth. The Marlins strung together four consecutive hits, including a two-run double from Jazz Chisholm Jr. that tied the game. A bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly later in the inning put Miami ahead for good.
The Rockies have now lost seven of their last nine games, with the bullpen posting a 5.67 ERA over that span. Manager Bud Black pointed to command issues after the game, noting that walks and missed spots in the strike zone proved costly.
Goodman's hot streak remains the lone consistent offensive spark for a team that has struggled to string together wins. He has homered in four of his last six games and driven in 11 runs during that stretch. But until the pitching staff finds a way to close out games, individual performances like his will continue to be overshadowed by late-inning collapses.
