A new survey reveals that while American sports fans are passionate about following their teams on the road, their interest in major international spectacles falls significantly behind the global average. The data highlights a distinct divide in sports travel habits.
According to a December 2025 YouGov survey, U.S. sports travelers are equally eager to journey for regular season games and playoff matches, with 41% expressing willingness for each. This enthusiasm outpaces worldwide fans by double digits in both categories. American fans demonstrate a clear, strong commitment to the domestic league calendar and postseason drama.
However, the trend reverses for major single-sport global events, such as the World Cup or the Olympics. Only 21% of American sports travelers are inclined to travel for these occasions, a full 18 points behind the global traveler average of 39%. This gap suggests a cultural preference for established domestic leagues over the once-every-few-years global tournaments that captivate fans elsewhere.
The findings paint a picture of a dedicated but inwardly focused sports travel market in the United States, where the rhythms of domestic seasons hold more sway than the call of international competition.
